Folder Guard Professional 8.3 Portable

Folder Guard Professional 8.3 Portable | 5.50 Mb

Folder Guard Professional is a powerful computer security software that you can use to control access to files, folders, and other Windows resources, such as Control Panel, Start Menu, and so on. You can use Folder Guard to lock your personal files and folders with passwords, to stop other users from peeking into your records. You can even completely hide your private folders from virtually all applications, and such folders would remain invisible until you enter a valid password. You can also protect sensitive system files from modification or destruction, disable access to the removable drives, restrict access to Control Panel, and more.

Folder Guard Professional Edition for Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Server (both 32-bit and 64-bit)
This edition combines the 32-bit and x64 editions of Folder Guard in one convenient package. When installed on the 32-bit versions of Windows it offers the same functionality as Folder Guard 32-bit Edition. When installed on the x64 versions of Windows, it works in the same way as Folder Guard x64 Edition. The older MS-DOS-based releases of Windows (such as Windows, 95, 98, Me) are NOT supported by this edition.

Why should you choose Folder Guard:
>> Folder Guard lets you password protect your files and folders.
You can protect with password virtually any folder or file, allowing only the authorized users to open the protected files or folders. You can protect an unlimited number of files and folders, each with its own password, or you can use the Master Password of Folder Guard to unprotect them all at once.

>> Folder Guard can hide your personal folders from other users.
You can set up Folder Guard to hide your private folders (or make them appear empty). The folder would be hidden from virtually any program, including Windows Explorer, Office, MS-DOS programs, etc.

>> Folder Guard can restrict access to Control Panel, Start Menu, Desktop, etc.
You can set up Folder Guard to allow only certain users to change the computer settings with Control Panel, while denying that to other users. You can control access to various settings of Start Menu, Desktop, Taskbar, and other Windows resources. You can remove the Run and Search commands on the Start menu, hide specific drives, lock the Internet settings, and more.

>> Folder Guard can protect access to the floppy, CD-ROM and other removable drives
You can configure Folder Guard to allow or deny access to the removable drives, restricting the user's ability to run or install unauthorized programs on your computer.

>> Folder Guard is suitable for a wide range of the computer security tasks.
You can stop other users of your computer from peeking into your personal files. You can protect the system files and folders from destruction by cyber-vandals. You can allow specific users to run a program while deny it to others. You can allow users to use the removable drives to store their documents while prevent them from running unauthorized programs from the removable disks.

>> Folder Guard protects your files without encrypting them.
There is no risk of losing your documents if you lose your encryption key: with Folder Guard all your files remain intact, without modification of any kind.

>> Folder Guard lets you quickly enable or disable the protection via a "hot key".
You can choose a specific keyboard combination as the hot key of Folder Guard, to be able to quickly enable or disable the protection of your computer. Of course, the "hot key" is protected with your password, too, only you can use it!

>> Folder Guard can operate in the "stealth mode".
You can set up Folder Guard to operate in the stealth mode, to hide its own files and shortcuts from being seen by other users. You would still be able to control Folder Guard via the "hot key".

>> Folder Guard supports easy recovery in case of emergency.
If you forget your password, or experience other problems, simply use the Emergency Recovery Utility (free download) to quickly restore access to your protected folder.

>> Folder Guard works with drives of any format.
If your computer can handle it, Folder Guard can protect it. You don't have to format your hard drive with the NTFS file system: Folder Guard can protect files and folders on both NTFS and FAT/FAT32 disks.

>> Folder Guard runs on a wide range of Windows platforms.
From Windows 2000 to Windows XP to Windows Vista and later, with all service packs and hotfixes, all are supported by at least one of the available editions of Folder Guard.

>> Folder Guard is easy to use.
Folder Guard sports one of the most intuitive user interfaces, that makes it easy to use for both novice users and computer professionals.

>> Folder Guard "speaks" plain English.
You don't have to be a computer professional to understand how to use Folder Guard. The Quick Start Wizard can guide you through the steps necessary to set up the password protection of your personal folders. Folder Guard Advisor warns you about situations that may require your attention and offers possible workarounds. Folder Guard User's Guide describes its commands and operation in plain English, without "pseudo-techno" or "geeky" talk. (And it does not baby-sit you either).

>> Folder Guard is not a toy.
Folder Guard is used by large corporations and small businesses, schools and police departments, universities and correctional facilities, libraries and hospitals (to name a few).

>> Folder Guard is widely used.
Hundreds of thousands of copies of Folder Guard have been downloaded by computer users from virtually all countries of the world.

>> Folder Guard offers the best value for the money.
None of our competitors offers a product that would come close to Folder Guard.

>> Folder Guard is flexible.
Although Windows lets you restrict access to folders located on a NTFS drives, it cannot hide them. With Folder Guard, you can not only restrict access to, but also hide folders, or make them look empty. Unlike Windows, Folder Guard lets you protect only some files within a folder, and keep the rest of the files visible and accessible, if you wish. Or, you can protect files and folders each with its own individual password, and then unlock them separately from each other (Windows cannot do that).

>> Folder Guard can be used with other disk tools.
You can designate your anti-virus and other disk maintenance tools to be the "trusted" programs, to make them able to work with your protected disks without restrictions.

>> Folder Guard is extensible.
You can fine-tune the access rules to the files and folders of your computer by creating appropriate filters.

>> Folder Guard will save you hours of learning time.
You don't have to learn how to use the Group Policies, user groups, Access Control Lists, privileges, and other built-in security features of Windows, because Folder Guard does the hard work for you: its visual and intuitive user interface lets you manage the restrictions with ease.

>> Folder Guard is actively maintained.
Since its first release back in 1997, we've been continuously extending, enhancing, and improving Folder Guard. Now in version 7.92, Folder Guard gives you more power than ever.

Rooney urged to learn from Sachin

The British media has lavished praise on iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar and according to a column written by former England cricketer Ed Smith, Manchester United star Wayne Rooney should learn how to turn expectations into inspiration.

In an article headlined ‘Sanctuary of crease lets Tendulkar reveal genius,’ Smith had written, “Twice last week, sportsmen have proved me spectacularly wrong. First, Sachin Tendulkar reached 14,000 Test match runs. And that’s not the amazing part.

“It took him fewer innings to get from 13,000 to 14,000 than any other 1,000-run chunk of his career. A case could be made that he is at his best now, at 37,” the newspaper noted.

The article said Tendulkar and Rooney were destined for rare greatness, even from teenage. Tendulkar has gone on and done it.A year ago, Rooney looked placed to do the same. But now, as never before, there are real doubts that he will become the player we once assumed he would be.

“Make no mistake, Tendulkar’s career has not been as serene as it might look, there have been arguments with coaches and match referees, an unsatisfactory spell as captain and long phases when the muse has deserted him.

“Tendulkar has had countless moments when frustration could have overwhelmed him. He has never blown his top, never lost his dignity. Instead, frustration has inspired him.”

“Above all, his career has been played out under the shadow of phenomenal expectation. Footballers in England have to deal with being heroes. In India it is even worse: they are meant to be Gods.”

“According to the report Tendulkar has come to the conclusion that there is one place where he is free from the hassles of fame. There is one realm where he cannot be pestered. It is called the crease.

“With the bat in his hands, Tendulkar is the conductor of his own life, not just a participant in a soap opera. There, out in the middle, no one can stop him being himself — not a restless media, not overly demanding fans or greedy agents.”

“It is the ultimate irony: the greatest actors are never freer than when they’re on the stage. That is the way for Rooney to find the way out of his present difficulties — he must have the bravery to express himself on the pitch, to make it his sanctuary.”

“If he allows himself to become embittered and resentful, he will not only become estranged from his fans, but also from his talent. No wonder the ball is bouncing off him at the moment; he probably would like to repel the whole game.

“Instead, he must learn to love it again. Shamed by alleged events off the pitch and embarrassed by events on it, Rooney could be forgiven for feeling sorry for himself,” the report said.

“It would be a normal thing to feel. But he doesn’t aspire to normality, but to greatness. And greatness, as Tendulkar has showed demands a superhuman degree of resilience and emotional dexterity. Rooney must locate his inner Tendulkar, a genius who got even with his critics by scoring hundreds.”“For Rooney, in every sense, it’s time to turn the pressure into goals.”

Apple in line to become world's most valued firm

As Apple prepares to announce its fourth-quarter results tonight, analysts are forecasting that it will have sold another 5m iPads, and around 12m more of the iPhone 4 it released in June.

If the numbers are good, then it is quite possible that the share price will jump further above the $300 (GBP190) mark that it broke last week — and the company could become the most valuable in the world measured by market capitalisation, surpassing the oil group ExxonMobil. It would cap a remarkable rebirth under the aegis of founder Steve Jobs.

Though at the end of last week the gulf in valuations seemed large — Exxon’s $331bn, against Apple’s $274bn — the gap has been closing for more than a year. Even if tonight’s results are not enough to propel Apple to the top spot, many on Wall Street think it is only a matter of time. Its profits will get another boost in January when Apple will begin selling iPhones through the largest network, Verizon, as well as AT&T, its partner since 2007.Apple is forecast to show revenues of around $19bn for the quarter and $5bn of profit — with the iPhone and iPad, products you could not buy four years ago, generating about $10bn of sales. It is a dramatic reversal from May 1997, when Jobs — who had recently rejoined the company after been fired in 1985 — was manoeuvring to take over again as chief executive. The share price put a total value on the company of just $2bn, “reflecting Apple’s loss of market share in an increasingly Windows-dominated world”, as analysts put it. Jobs told a team of software coders at the time: “You’ve got to start with the customer experience and work back to the technology — not the other way around.” He drove out the dead wood, his new recruit from PC-maker Compaq, Tim Cook (now the chief operating officer) streamlined its supply chain, and the company did as Jobs suggested, focusing relentlessly on its customers. He also set targets — such as surpassing Dell. Asked in October 1997 what he would do in Jobs’s position, Michael Dell retorted: “What would I do? I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.” Jobs chastised Dell privately — and then celebrated with an email to staff when in January 2006, with a value of $72.1bn, it did finally pass Dell. In May this year, Apple achieved a huge milestone, passing Microsoft in market capitalisation, at GBP222bn against GBP219bn.

Apple’s computer business has steadily improved, coming third behind HP and Dell in the personal computer market in the U.S. in the three months to September, according to research firm Gartner, although it still has a relatively small share of the global market. But it has been the newer products that have driven growth. Apple took ownership of the MP3 market with the iPod, where the integration of hardware and the iTunes software proved to be a success and baffled those who had expected Microsoft to at some stage overwhelm it with an “iPod killer” — based on software from one company, hardware from a second, and music from a third.

Then in January 2007 Jobs unveiled the iPhone, and Apple began to eat into the smartphone market — previously the sole preserve of Nokia, Research In Motion (with its BlackBerry) and Microsoft, with Windows Mobile. Sales took off again, and Jobs’s comparatively modest target of 10m phones sold by the end of 2008 was easily surpassed, with 13m sold by September of that year.iPad to keep lead in tablet computer segment’

The latest hit is the iPad. Launched in April, analysts think it could sell 25m in 2011. Gartner has made dramatic forecasts for the growth of the tablet computer market, which it said would triple in size next year to 54.8m units. The technology research firm is predicting that the market will grow to 103.4m in 2012 and 154.2m units in 2013. Despite the intensifying competition, Gartner reckons the iPad will keep its lead until then.Apple’s longtime rival Microsoft (presently still valued at GBP219bn) became the largest company in the world by market capitalisation for two years, in the late 1990s during the PC boom. At the time, Microsoft did not pay dividends, though it does now. Apple still does not pay dividends but if it does reach the top, it might have to find some other way to make its stock look more attractive than simply the chance that it will keep rising in value.

Apple will come under increasing pressure to do something with its enormous cash pile of roughly $50bn, which was a necessary buffer when times were lean, but now looks like wasted opportunity. “Apple needs to do something with all of that capital,” said Toan Tran, an analyst at financial research house Morningstar. “I could understand wanting to have something in reserve, but $50bn is such a ridiculous number that they should seriously consider returning some of it to shareholders in the form of share buybacks.” If Apple does surpass Exxon, it would mark a changing of the guard in the Standard & Poor’s 500, where the top spot has been shared by companies including General Electric, General Motors, AT&T (before it was broken up in a monopoly investigation), and — 20 years ago — by IBM, which was also hit by antitrust investigations. With suggestions that the world is approaching “peak oil” and increasing concern over the role that fossil fuels play in climate change, Exxon looks set to be replaced by perhaps the most potent symbol of the digital age.

Facebook apps ‘leaking details to advertisers’

Many applications on Facebook can pass on information that personally identifies users and friends to advertisers and “internet tracking agencies”, the Wall Street Journal reports, saying it can affect people even with the strictest privacy settings enabled.A Facebook spokesman told the news organisation on yesterday (17OCT) that the social media site is moving to “dramatically limit” the leaking of users’ personal information, as it breaks the site’s own rules. The report says that many apps grab a user’s ID number, which is unique, and can then pass them on to internet advertising companies. It says that all of the 10 most popular apps did so, including Zynga’s FarmVille, Texas HoldEm Poker and FrontierVille. Three of the top 10, including FarmVille, also transmitted personal information about the user’s friends to external companies.Your unique IDs are like beacons

The data transmitted - the “Facebook ID” - is unique to each user, and can be used to look up your name even if your profile is set at its strictest setting. It also reveals any data that has been set to be visible to “everyone” on the site - which in fact means visible across the web.

For Facebook, it is the latest in a long line of privacy concerns, but one which the site may also be concerned about - because if internet advertising companies can extract value from Facebook about user IDs, it might make them less likely to buy advertising on the site. In that way, the leaching of Facebook IDs, and of people’s “social graphs” - who they are linked to - will be of great concern to Facebook, which derives its value from being able to act as the go-between for highly targeted advertising served to its users.

The WSJ said that the apps were sending Facebook IDs to at least 25 advertising and data firms, which build profiles of people by tracking them online. The row over what data can safely be made available - and to what extent advertisers and tracking companies could and should be able to identify people from their browsing - is longstanding. In the 1990s the activities of the advertising company DoubleClick caused concern when it was realised that it could target people because it provided “cookies” on each site that they visited, and target ads at them. DoubleClick is now owned by Google.

Facebook IDs on sale

More recently it has been Facebook, with its 500 million users, which has come repeatedly into the privacy spotlight.

The WSJ says “one data-gathering firm, RapLeaf Inc, had linked Facebook user ID information obtained from apps to its own database of internet users, which it sells. RapLeaf also transmitted the Facebook IDs it obtained to a dozen other firms, the Journal found.” Rapleaf told the paper: “We didn’t do it on purpose”.Collecting user and friends’ IDs would let companies build up individual profiles of people who it could cross-match against other data collected from censuses and public information to create detailed profiles of people. While advertisers argue that that means better-targeted information, it concerns many people who are unsure what data is held about them personally by such companies.

Earlier this month (OCT) the Guardian showed that many people’s phone details are retained on Facebook without their knowledge following uploads from their mobile phones or external email systems - and a BBC investigation found that even people who were not signed up to the site would be identifiable to it, based on details supplied by their friends, as soon as they provided an email address.

T. rex may have been a cannibal, says study

Palaeontologists have found evidence that Tyrannosaurus rex, the largest and most dreaded dinosaur that roamed North America 66 million years ago, might have been a cannibal which sometimes devoured its own species.

The scientists, who based their study on the bite marks on the carnivores’ bones, believe the marks were made by other T. rexes.

The marks suggest that the giants were killed and then eaten out by victorious T. rexes, the researchers reported in the journal PLoS ONE.While searching through dinosaur fossil collections for another study on dinosaur bones with mammal tooth marks, Nick Longrich, a researcher from Yale University, discovered a bone with especially large gouges in them.Given the age and location of the fossil, the marks had to be made by T. rex, Mr. Longrich said. “They’re the kind of marks that any big carnivore could have made, but T. rex was the only big carnivore in western North America 65 million years ago,” Mr. Longrich said.It was only after discovering the bite marks were from a T. rex that Mr. Longrich realised the bone itself also belonged to the behemoth.

After searching through a few dozen T. rex bones from several different museum fossil collections, he discovered a total of three foot bones (including two toes) and one arm bone that showed evidence of T. rex cannibalism, representing a significant percentage.

“It’s surprising how frequent it appears to have been,” Mr. Longrich said. “We’re not exactly sure what that means.”

The marks are definitely the result of feeding. If two T. rex fought to the death, the victor might have made a meal out of his adversary, said Mr. Longrich. He said: “Modern big carnivores do this all the time. It’s a convenient way to take out the competition and get a bit of food at the same time.”

However, the marks appear to have been made some time after death, Mr. Longrich said, meaning that if one dinosaur killed another, it might have eaten most of the meat off the more accessible parts of the carcass before returning to pick at the smaller foot and arm bones. While only one other dinosaur species, Majungatholus, is known to have been a cannibal, Mr. Longrich said the practice was likely more common than we think and a closer examination of fossil bones could turn up more evidence that other species also preyed on one another. The finding is a big clue into the obscure eating habits of these enormous predators. While today’s large carnivores often hunt together in packs, T. rex likely acted on their own, Mr. Longrich said.

“These animals were some of the largest terrestrial carnivores of all time. There’s a big mystery around what and how they ate, and this research helps to uncover one piece of the puzzle.”

Facebook, Bing teams up to give online search a social touch

Bangalore: Facebook users using Bing will see their friends' like popping up when they run their Bing searches while logged into their Facebook account. In addition, while searching for friends in Bing, they will have people with common Facebook friends topping the search result.

The move is a result of Microsoft's decision of adding input from users' Facebook data to the results the Bing search pulls up. According to a Facebook spokesperson, the service is already available to two percent of Facebook users in the U.S. and it will be available to the rest in coming weeks. Satya Nadella, Senior Vice President of Microsoft's Online Services Division, said that search has become more personalized and social today. Hence, while searching a user must also look at the connections between people. The process of connecting to information can be more personal and useful by using a social layer, said Nadella.

There will be two new features in Bing - 'Liked Results' and 'Facebook Profile Search'. 'Liked Results' will show what the user's friends like when he/she launches an online search while in Facebook. On the other hand, 'Facebook Profile Search' narrows down the search by listing people who share mutual Facebook friends with the searcher at the top of the results. Both Microsoft and Facebook are saying that that they'll safeguard users' privacy as it is the most important priority. In its 'Instant Personalization' project, Facebook has teamed up with several partners apart from Bing including Rotten Tomatoes, Docs.com, Pandora, Yelp and Scribd. All of them are bound to follow Facebook's guidelines and can only use subscribers' public information.

As per Facebook's terms and conditions, a user should be 13 years of age to access its services, while Bing's Facebook Profile Search can be used by those users who list themselves as 18 years or older in their Facebook profiles.

Cybercriminals in India creating botnets to capture PCs

New Delhi: Cybercriminals in India are increasingly looking at creating botnets, network of computers aimed at attacking and 'capturing' PCs to spread viruses through them to other systems, according to Microsoft report.India ranks 25th in terms of bot infections detected and removed in the quarter ended June 2010, according to the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report version 9. The report covered 200 countries and territories. The country had 38,954 computers with bots cleaned in Q2 this year compared to 37,895 computers in the previous quarter.A Botnet is a network of computers, controlled by one computer (bot herder), which attacks another PC and makes it a part of its network. The main drivers for botnets are for recognition and financial gains. The larger the botnet, the more recognition the herder can claim to have among the cybercriminal community. The bot herder can also offer services of the botnet to third parties, usually for sending spam messages. Due to the large numbers of machines within the botnet, huge volumes of such mails can be generated.

"It is clear that the controllers work hard to sustain, maintain and grow them for financial gain. If it is a consumer the data and financial loss may not amount to a huge amount, but the loss is more severe if we talk about organsiations or at a government level," Microsoft India Chief Security Officer Sanjay Bahl told PTI.

Microsoft estimates that $780 million was lost globally in 2008-09 to spam mails. "It's clear that the evolution of the botnet is a major concern. As well as the prominent rise in infections on a global scale, data from this year's report has also shown that cybercriminals are now using more sophisticated techniques like botnets to further their reach of potential victims," Ovum Analyst Graham Titterington said.Over the past few years, volumes of spam originating from a single computer has dropped in order to thwart spam detection. The trend is moving towards using a larger number of compromised hosts for sending smaller amount of messages. This helps evade detection by anti-spam techniques.

Though the numbers in India might seem small, but such attacks are increasing. "Cybercriminals play with vulnerabilities. For example, in a developing country like Brazil, people are engaging in online payments, so the cyber criminal will try and attack through spam mails promising lottery and bank payments," Bahl said.

India looking at Obama’s visit with hope, optimism: Envoy

People of India are looking U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit with great hope and optimism, and this will herald a new era of relationship between the two nations, Indian Ambassador to the U.S. has said.
“We look forward to President Obama’s visit to India next month with great hope and optimism and as an opportunity at highest political level to steer our relationship onto a new higher plane,” said Meera Shankar, Indian envoy to the U.S.
Addressing students of George Washington University, Shankar said the basic fundamentals of India-U.S. relations, regardless of any minor issue-specific differences, give confidence that the strategic dimension of this relationship would truly manifest itself in practical terms through joint efforts in all areas of cooperation, including at the international level.
“Both countries have the strong political will to move in this direction. We share common interests and concerns, and jointly seek to build our relationship as a long-term global partnership. Both countries have expressed conviction that enduring bilateral relations do not serve us only bilaterally, but also in meaningfully addressing new global threats and challenges,” she said on Tuesday.Ms. Shankar said Mr. Obama visit to India in November promises to be a landmark visit.
“We look forward to not only consolidating the enormous strides that we have taken in our relationship in recent years but also to set directions and lay out a vision for the future course of our strategic partnership,” she had said in her speech, provided by Indian Embassy in Washington.
“India and the US hold regular and candid dialogue on Afghanistan and Pakistan; we exchange views and coordinate approaches on other developments in South Asia; we have commenced a dialogue on East Asia and the evolving Asian economic and security architecture. We discuss how we can work together for development of Africa,” she said.In the larger Asian and global context, both the US and India have begun exploratory discussions on how they can work together to ensure the safety of the Global Commons -- including maritime security and protecting the domains of space and cyber space, Ms. Shankar said.Nothing was a greater symbol and instrument of transformation in India-U.S. relations than the Civil Nuclear Agreement, she said adding that it not only addressed an issue which had constrained the full potential of the bilateral relationship but also created new economic opportunities to cooperate in the areas of civil nuclear energy, energy security, climate change and nuclear proliferation.“India has identified two sites for building nuclear reactors in cooperation with U.S. companies and we hope to commence commercial negotiations shortly. A new dimension is our Space cooperation with India’s first moon mission, Chandrayaan 1, carrying a NASA payload which detected the existence of water on the moon.“There are good prospects for expanding this cooperation in other areas such as exchange of data for weather prediction and climate change, space exploration and space flights,” she said.Seeking U.S. help in securing Permanent Membership of the UN Security Council, Shankar argued the need for the two countries to work together to reform the international architecture of global governance.
“We are already moving towards more representative mechanisms for global financial and economic management, but we need to reform the institutions that deal with political and security challenges including the UN. Security Council for which there is growing support,” she said.
“This would not only enhance their legitimacy but also impact positively on the efficacy of these institutions. As a country of over a billion people, with one of the fastest growing economies and as a democratic nation, India is willing to assume its responsibility to meet the global challenges of our times,” Ms. Shankar said.

Picture of Bopanna, Qureshi wins ‘Image of Year’ award

A picture of ‘Indo-Pak Express’ tennis stars, Rohan Bopana and his doubles partner Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi, taken by the U.S.-based Indian photo journalist Jay Mandal has won the ‘Image of the Year’ prize under the prestigious ‘Peace and Sport’ award. For the first time, the winner of the award for Peace and Sport’s Image of the Year was chosen by a public voting system on Internet. The winning photograph of Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Qureshi, submitted by the ATP World Tour, won nearly 60 per cent of the votes.

“The message of peace given by Rohan and Aisam is a unique source of inspiration for young people in their respective countries, but its significance does not stop there,” Joel Bouzou, President and founder of ‘Peace and Sport’ that gives the prestigious award said at a ceremony announcing the 21st edition of the Georges Bertellotti Golden Podium Awards held at SPORTEL Monaco.

“They use their charisma and their sporting success to raise awareness amongst the entire international community, their fellow athletes and political authorities in their countries, as we saw at the US Open. I hope that their appeal will lead the way to new rapprochement initiatives,” Bouzou said.

The picture captured by New York-based Mandal shows the two tennis star from the sub-continent along with Indian Ambassador to the UN Hardeep Singh Puri and his Pakistani counterpart Abdullah H Haroon.Despite the differences between the two countries, Bopanna and Qureshi have played doubles for three years.

“Sport’s greatest victory is not measured in terms of medals. It is measured by its ability to positively change people’s lives and bring them hope. And that’s exactly what Rohan and Aisam succeed in doing. They demonstrate what champions can achieve when they use their celebrity (status) for a good cause,” Bouzou said.According to a media release, the two players will be attending the 4th International Forum Peace and Sport on December 2 in Monaco with 450 international leaders.

Saina wins singles gold, India finish second

Women shuttlers led by singles title—favourite Saina Nehwal provided India with a golden double to pilot the country to a historic second—place finish in the Commonwealth Games that ended here today.

Saina rallied brilliantly from a first—game loss to put it across Mew Choo Wong of Malaysia 19—21 23—21 21—13 in the women’s singles final after Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa had captured the doubles crown.

The men’s hockey team crashed to a humiliating 0—8 defeat against world and defending champions Australia in the final, but the two—gold final flourish in badminton enabled India to rise to the second spot in the medals tally with 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals.

England, ahead of India going into the last day of the Games, finished in third place with a total haul of 37—59—45 while Australia ended up in the top position with a huge heist of 74—54—48.The push for the second spot on the concluding day was started by Jwala and Ashwini. The duo overwhelmed Singapore’s Sari Shanti Mulia and Yao Lei in straight games to become India’s first women’s doubles pair to win a gold medal in badminton.

The second—seeded Indian pair subdued their top—seeded rivals 21—16 21—19 by combining attack and defense in the right mixture in front of the packed crowd at the Siri Fort complex. Then came Saina’s crucial gold—winning effort that pushed the country ahead of England, in their bitter fight for the runner—up position in the Games. The hosts clinched another medal, a bronze, in table tennis when Poulomi Ghatak and Mouma Das prevailed in the women’s doubles bronze medal play—off against Australian duo Tan Zed Vivian and Peri Campbell—Innes. But in men’s hockey gold medal—deciding clash, the Indian team suffered one of their worst—ever defeats in front of a huge crowd that included Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.High—flying India were brought down to earth rudely and ruthlessly by Australia who dished out a clinical display to spank the hosts in a totally lopsided summit clash. The Indians, who had pipped England in a thrilling penalty shoot—out in the semis two days ago to make their maiden entry into the final, came up with a rather pathetic show when it mattered most and had to be content with the silver medal. The capacity crowd at the national stadium were left heart—broken as the hosts conceded goals with embarrassing ease in the summit showdown. The sweltering conditions had no effect on Australia’s performance as they proved too strong for the erstwhile Asian giants and completely outplayed the hosts with their power hockey.

Apple patent would enforce parental controls on texting

The company yesterday reportedly secured from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office patent 7,814,163, which covers "systems, devices, and methods" that allow a user to determine what kind of text-messaging content can be sent or received from a given device.According to the filing, either messages will be blocked entirely or the "forbidden content" will be "removed from the message prior to transmission or as part of the receiving process." In order to filter the content, Apple said that it will use certain criteria as defined by a separate parental control application. That application will include "objective ratings criteria or a user's age or grade level" to determine what kind of words and content will be allowed in text messages, and what will not. Whenever a text message contains inappropriate content, the applications will "alert the user, the administrator, or other designated individuals of the presence of such text." In other words, kids who are trying to get away with an unsavory text message could find their parents being alerted by the app.

Apple's filing also points out that the patent could do more than just abet prevention of inappropriate communication. The application could also be used as "an instructional tool or study aid" to help kids with text-based communication, such as grammar, spelling, or vocabulary. The app would allow administrators to send certain messages to students and ask them to respond with the proper response. If the message is grammatically incorrect, for example, the parent or administrator of the tool will be alerted to "the absence of such text."

"These embodiments might, for example, require that a certain number of Spanish words per day be included in e-mails for a child learning Spanish," the patent abstract reads.Apple, which applied for the patent in January 2008, could be on to something with this.

Inappropriate text messages have been on the increase. In fact, Pew Research found last year that 30 percent of 17-year-olds had received sexually explicit images from others. The practice, known as sexting, is a legal issue for one, but it's also worrisome to parents who don't want their kids to be involved in such practices. Although it seems that Apple's patent relates to text, the proposed service could at least arm parents with another line of defense against their children engaging in inappropriate communication.

AT&T launching 3 Microsoft-powered phones

Microsoft will launch three new smart phones with AT&T ahead of the holiday shopping season. The new phones will run on Microsoft’s new mobile software in a test of whether Microsoft can catch up with rivals in the fast-growing smart phone market.T-Mobile also plans a phone running Windows Phone 7 software for the holiday season. The new handsets will go up against both the iPhone and the expanding number of phones running on Google’s Android operating system.

The phones AT&T plans to launch will be manufactured by HTC, LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics. The first will go on sale on November 8, with two more coming a few weeks later. The phones could help AT&T make up for the possible loss of its exclusive rights to sell Apple’s hugely popular iPhone. Published reports say the iPhone is coming to Verizon Wireless by early next year.

For Microsoft, the new devices represent one step in an uphill struggle.

In the most recent quarter, the company’s existing cell phone software accounted for just 5 per cent of the worldwide smart phone market. That compares with 41 per cent for Nokia’s Symbian system, 18 per cent for Research in Motion’s BlackBerry phones, 17 per cent for Android and 14 per cent for the iPhone. At an event in New York on Monday, Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer said the company’s new software will power “a very different kind of phone” than customers are used to.

“We want you to get in, get out and back to your life,” he said.

The iPhone and Android are popular in part because of the tens of thousands of tiny applications, or “apps,” made by outside software developers. But those developers may not want to devote the resources to build programmes for another smart phone system until it gains traction with users. In the past, Microsoft focused narrowly on building phone software, giving handset makers and wireless carriers lots of leeway to adapt and customise their products. In the wake of the iPhone’s success, Microsoft has adjusted its strategy, retaining more control over the way the phones look and work. The iPhone prompted a generation of look-alike smart phones, with screenfuls of tiny square icons representing each programme. Microsoft has tried to avoid an icon-intensive copy, instead relying more on clickable words and images generated by content. For example, a weather programme might show a constantly updated snapshot of weather conditions; photo or music libraries would be represented by a recent snapshot or the cover of the last album played on the device.Windows Phone 7 borrows its aesthetic from the company’s Zune media players, and the entertainment “hub” on the phone is based on the Zune the same way the music on the iPhone is filed under the “iPod” section. Many other Microsoft programmes and services come built in on the new phones. There’s a mobile version of the Bing search engine, for example, and a games “hub” that can connect to Xbox Live, Microsoft’s online gaming community.

Apple now third-largest PC seller in U.S.

According to the Quarterly PC Tracker Survey released by IDC today, Apple shipped 1.99 million Macs in the U.S. during the third quarter of 2010. That's good for 10.6 percent of the 18.9 million PCs shipped in the U.S., putting Apple's share at its highest in the U.S. in the company's history, according to IDC.

While that's still far behind Hewlett-Packard's 24.3 percent share and Dell's 23.1 percent share, both of those companies' shipments remained relatively static over the last year. Apple saw its shipments grow 24 percent from the same quarter a year ago.

And it's not just the sales growth of HP and Dell it's besting: the entire U.S. PC market during the third quarter grew just 3.8 percent from a year ago (even though it was forecast at 11 percent), meaning Apple shipments of Macs grew at eight times the rate of everyone else. It's fairly remarkable considering the lingering weakness in the economy and the company's computers having been saddled with the "too expensive" label--whether accurate or not.

So why is Apple doing so well selling computers now? IDC analyst David Daoud says the iPad may actually be one of the reasons.

"It is very possible that the iPad's marketing right now is impacting [Apple's Mac] business as a halo effect, just like we saw several years ago with the iPod," he said. "The momentum went on with the iPhone, now it appears the iPad is playing a similar role, stimulating sales across its product line."

Apple sold more than 3 million iPads between April and June, and it's very likely we'll get an updated number for sales over the last three months when Apple reports its quarterly earnings results on Monday. What is interesting is the suggestion that the iPad is not taking away sales of Macs, but helping them. Unlike the iPod which has a completely different use case than a Mac, there's been discussion over whether the iPad can in some instances replace a notebook computer.

Best Buy's CEO was quoted last month saying that the iPad had cut into notebook sales by as much as 50 percent. Though he later backed off that statement, he only said the 50 percent figure was a "gross exaggeration." He didn't say there wasn't any cannibalization effect.

Either way, it's good news for the Mac business, which doesn't get nearly the attention it used to, with the iPhone and iPad raking in huge amounts of revenue for the company, and the clear trend in the industry toward highly mobile devices. But we know for sure that next week we'll hear more about the Mac and Mac OS X, when Apple holds a special event at its headquarters to talk about hardware and the next version of the Mac operating system. Here's what CNET expects we might see on the Mac front.

Though overall consumer sales weren't so hot, enterprise computer sellers did a decent business during the third quarter, IDC says. Lenovo, which sells heavily to large businesses, grew 32.9 percent in its worldwide sales. The long-awaited "commercial refresh"--the cycle of companies replacing employee computers and IT equipment en masse--continued on schedule.

Perennial worldwide market leader HP saw little change in volume, claiming 17.7 percent of the 89.3 million computers shipped in the third quarter. Acer reclaimed its No. 2 spot with 13 percent of shipments, Dell dropped backed to third place with 12.5 percent, Lenovo claimed 10.3 percent of shipments, and newcomer Asus stayed firmly in the top five with 5.4 percent of shipments.

Gartner released its market share results today as well, and saw similar numbers: HP with 17.5 percent of shipments worldwide, Acer 13.1, Dell 12.2, Lenovo 10.4, and Asus with 5.4 percent.
